What Is Covered California?

Covered California is California’s official health insurance marketplace — a state-run platform where individuals and families can compare and enroll in health plans. It was created to make health insurance more accessible and to connect eligible residents with financial assistance based on income.

It’s also the entry point for Medi-Cal, California’s free or low-cost public health insurance program for those who qualify.

Who Is Covered California For?

Covered California may be a fit if you:

  • Don’t have coverage through an employer or a spouse’s employer
  • Are self-employed or work part-time
  • Are between jobs or recently lost coverage
  • Are a U.S. citizen or lawfully present immigrant living in California
  • Have income that may qualify for financial help with health insurance premiums

Income Eligibility & Financial Assistance

For many Californians, the answer is yes. Financial assistance through Covered California is based on your household income compared to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)

Can Financial Assistance Help Lower My Health Insurance Premiums?

  • Income at or below ~138% FPL: You may qualify for Medi-Cal — no or very low cost
  • Income between ~138%–400% FPL: You may qualify for premium tax credits to reduce your health insurance premiums
  • Income limits are updated each year and depend on household size

For example, a single adult earning approximately $21,597 or less per year may qualify for Medi-Cal. Those earning above that threshold may qualify for subsidized plans on Covered California.
