Employee Benefit

Introduction

While many individuals and families explore coverage through Covered California, other types of health insurance options may also be available. The right option can depend on factors such as employment, eligibility, and personal preferences.

Insurance Options

Types of other insurance options available to you based on your situation.

Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal — Free or Low-Cost Health Insurance for Qualifying Californians. Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program. Most adults with a household income at or below 138% of the Federal Poverty Level may qualify for Medi-Cal at no cost. Children and pregnant individuals may qualify at higher income levels. Medi-Cal enrollment is open year-round — no waiting for Open Enrollment. If you apply through Covered California and your income qualifies, you may be automatically directed to Medi-Cal.

Employer-Sponsored Coverage

Group Health Insurance Through Your Employer If you or a family member is employed, group coverage health insurance may be available through your workplace. Employers typically contribute toward health insurance premiums, which can significantly lower your monthly cost. The average employee health insurance cost per month in USA varies widely depending on the employer, plan type, and location. If you have access to affordable group health insurance, you may not qualify for Covered California subsidies.

Small Group Health Insurance

Small Group Health Insurance — For Business Owners and the Self-Employed If you're self-employed or run a small business, group health insurance for self-employed individuals and small businesses may be available. Small group health insurance plans can offer coverage for you and your employees, sometimes with more plan choices than individual options. A health insurance advisor can help you understand what qualifies as a small group and which plans are available in your area.

Private Health Insurance

Individual Health Insurance Outside the Marketplace Some people purchase individual health insurance directly from a private insurer outside of Covered California. These plans may offer different coverage or provider networks, but they are not eligible for government subsidies.

Important Notes: Health coverage options can vary based on your personal situation, eligibility, and location. It may be helpful to review your options carefully before making a decision.
